What is currently required for an American to cross into Canada and then return?

Are there any changes pending?

Re: Current ID requirements to cross into Canada?

I went over to Canada (Ontario) in November and all that I needed was a drivers license. I have heard rumors about a passport being needed in the future, but not as of yet.

If you take a child with you, make darn sure you have their birth certificate or you'll have a huge headache on your hands.

I like that flooring you put down in your boat boom. I'm thinking I will do that. How many yards did you get?

I won't even spit over the line anymore. I refuse to sell any ebay items to Canada. I have a friend that works as a Lineman for Puget Sound Energy. He got stuck up in Bellingham for a while, and had to cross the border on numerous occasions. Hassled in the PSE truck every time. Its gotten insane. My last mailing to Canada was some old issues of the Harley "Enthusiast" magazine. Private damn mail. Residence. 8 x 12 envelope 1/2 inch thick at the most. Sent back for NO CUSTOMS FORM! Post Office took it, so what was THEIR problem. I have ZERO against our brothers and sisters there, but your government, like ours, plain a$$ sucks.. If you do cross the border, suggest get a passport NOW. Then just don't say a word to them. Just answer the questions. Even with a CCA permit, I wouldn't even carry a zippo with a wick near them.

Passports are required on flights as of Jan 23, 07. Passports for crossing the boarder by land are required June 1, 09.

I think if you check Scaaty, you'll find it was the shipper who returned it. Often they pass over to their Canadian handlers who can be quite bad. UPS is about the worst for out here. I've never had the slightest problem with USPS.

Re: Current ID requirements to cross into Canada?

The passport requirement for land crossings has been changed several times in the last year.
It appears now that the date could be anytime in 2008.

Here is the official poop fro the US Department of state.

ENTRY/EXIT REQUIREMENTS: All persons entering Canada may be required to present proof of citizenship and identity. U.S. citizens are encouraged to show a U.S. passport. If they do not have a passport, they should be prepared to provide a government-issued photo ID (e.g. Driver’s License) and proof of U.S. citizenship such as a U.S. birth certificate, naturalization certificate, or U.S. passport.

U.S. citizens entering Canada from a third country must have a valid U.S. passport. A visa is not required for U.S. citizens to visit Canada of up to 180 days. Anyone seeking to enter Canada for any purpose besides a visit, (e.g. to work, study or immigrate) should contact the Canadian Embassy or nearest consulate prior to travel. Anyone with a criminal record (including some misdemeanors such as Driving While Impaired (DWI) charges) may be excluded or removed from Canada, and should contact the Canadian Embassy or nearest Canadian consulate well in advance of any planned travel for further processing, which may take some time.

IMPORTANT NEW INFORMATION: Effective January 23, 2007, all U.S. citizens traveling by air to and from the Caribbean, Bermuda, Panama, Mexico and Canada are required to have a valid passport to enter or re-enter the United States. As early as January 1, 2008, U.S. citizens traveling between the United States and the Caribbean, Bermuda, Panama, Mexico and Canada by land or sea (including ferries), may be required to present a valid U.S. passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security. American citizens can visit travel.state.gov or call 1-877-4USA-PPT (1-877-487-2778) for information on applying for a passport.

As far as shipping packages is concerned, keep the shipping weight below 4# and use FedEx, cheap and fast.

Go over 4# by even a few ounces will cost you dearly.
Example: 4# package, $13.
5# package to the same destination, $84.

It went out of our satellite PO, USPS. I've dealt with UPS, and when that really ticked me off (old Scott Atwater parts), and not worth the hassle, the return of the mags was the last straw. Actually its nobody's fault, just the way the world is heading/going. Sad. Thing is if I DO send a package over the border (if someone wants to bid from me from CA, I will allow and put on the my exemption list), its a simple scribbled form, and off. Bureaucracy, and aint much we can do about it. I can see CROSSING the border, but a simple small package? But ya gotta remember, its the government, and they sadly have no competition

The border states such as Michigan are trying to get an I.D that is a drivers license and works as a passport for Canada. That why the date is always changing for requiring passports for border crossing.
