if your talking the spun stainless cup holders that rust......

get yourself some citrisurf.

the spinning/graining of the stainless exposes the iron in the stainless. you need to passivate. hence the citrisurf. a few times cleaning them and you remove the free iron.

Good guess but not the correct answer.....won two all expense paid vacations to Sweden and one to Spokane WA on this very subject.

You actually have two issues.... the machining and tooling process temporarily removes the materials protective oxide layer. The resulting contamination (oil, dirt, etc.) on the surface inhibits the formation of the oxide layer leaving the elements of the matrix open to attack. For this, passivation simply removes the impurities to allow uniform oxidation to occur.

Fe is actually deposited/transferred to the surface from the tooling involved. Have also found traces of carbide traced back to carbide fly cutters used in the machining process as well. You can also have sulfides to contend with.

These have not rusted yet. Been 2 years

Whatever type you choose, make sure you install more then you think you need. I have four cup holder in my 14' stick-steering boat. That way if you fish from either side, a cup holder is there for you...

Lol right!
I have 4 in my cockpit, and 2 up in the bow. Haven't figured where to put 2 more in the stern yet.

In days of old when cup holders were an oddity on anything but a cruiser, I bought 2 of these and a bunch of extra plastic mounts. They mounted vertically with 2 screws and could be put anywhere. When I changed seats I just took the cup holder along with the can.

I'm surprised they still make the same ones today.
