Thinking of buying a 1986 boat with 230 Crusader that has never been rebuilt. It seem to run alright and I will have it checked out by a macanic. But, should I plan on having to get it rebuilt soon. How long does an engine like this last. There's no hours meter

How long it should last depends on a lot of information we don't have. Like size, type and weight of boat, number of hours on the engine, how well it's been taken care of. Fresh water or salt water use, closed cooling system or not. Does it look pretty clean, or is it all rusted? What's the oil look like? any records of oil changes, tuneups, etc?
A compression test, properly done is going to tell you a lot about the engine and if it's going to need a rebuild soon or not. See link below.

How to do a compression test

Yes, I guess a compression test is the best way to go. Thanks for the link.
