I have a 270 crusader that began backfiring, The crab is new Not rebuilt but out of the box new. I changed the cap, rotor, plugs & wires, Timing is set as close as possibe since I don't have a timing light. The engine is one of two inboards, the other set the same is fine. Any ideas guys.

There is no possible way you can have the timing right without a light...I'd start there.

When does she backfire? On throttle, mid way, full, etc? You're experiencing a lean condition.

You need a timing light...Sometimes engines sound like they are running better advanced, when in fact they are slowly destroying their pistons from pre-ignition detonation. I think your timing is too far advsanced......J

Re: Crusader Backfires

I'm very far from an expert but here it goes. I bought two brand new Crusaders last fall with LOTS of problems, but thats another story!!! If your backfiring at start up, like I usually do, Try pumping the throttle 1/3 up. Do this procedure twice and bring the throttle all the way back down to idle. It's worked for me!-- Just a little tid bit for you. One of my new crusaders blew the ignition module inside the distributor. Again, I'm no expert, but you may want to have that looked at by the mechanic. My engine came with a Mallory distributor and the ignition module was just about unservicable unless you removed the entire distributor. good luck. P.S. I'll make this short-- Both of my BRAND NEW crusaders failed - oil pickup fell off the oil pump. Keep an eye on your oil pressure.
