I'm going to cruise the entire 128 miles of the Monongahela River from Pittsburgh to Fairmont, WV in my 21' Sea Ray cuddy this weekend before the Army Corps of Engineers abandons the upper two locks next year. Any locals have "nice to know" information about this cruise? Where to stay over night? Places to eat? Navigation issues? I'm anticipating a two-day, one night trip.

I'm in Dilliner, Pa tonight. I did 88 miles and five locks today. Above Lock and Dam 4, the river is very scenic. The water is incredibly clear. It's been a very worthwhile trip.

Re: Cruising the Monongahela

I completed the trip. It turned out to be a 3-day, 2-night trip. I overnighted at Two Rivers Marina at Mile 88 (Dilliner, PA) both nights. They have an EXCELLENT restaurant and pretty nice showers.

To make the trip, I put in at the South Side ramp in Pittsburgh, cruised 88 miles and transited five locks to the marina on the first day. The next day, I went up to and returned from the source of the Monongehela where the Tygart and West Fork meet above Fairmont, WV. That was 80 miles round trip and four locks each way. The third day was a return to Pittsburgh.

If you're a river cruiser, you might consider this trip before the locks are abandoned. When that happens, there will be a nice 7 1/2 mile stretch of river between the Hidebrand and Opekiska locks with no public access. It's also my understanding that the pool behind the Opekiska lock (the last one on the Monongahela) is the highest elevation navigable waterway in the U.S. where a boat can then leave and reach the ocean. That will be no longer possible when the lock is abandoned.

I paddled some of that water in a canoe back in the late 70's when there were still barge tows to worry about. It is a pretty stretch of river above Morgantown. Sounds like you had a great cruise! any pictures?

Awesome cruise, Four Winns! But it didn't happen if their aren't pics!;)

Hopefully someone will find a way to keep those locks open after the Army Corps abandon's them ... will be a regrettable loss. Thanks for sharing your trip with us!

sounds like something I would like to do but I don't think it would happen before the locks close. Did you have to wait very long to get thru them?

I encountered no delays at all, but delays are possible if there are commercial vessels. They have priority over recreational boats.

Here are a few pictures from the trip.

The lower portions of the river have a lot of industry, but an interesting view anyway.

The upper portions of the river have a lot of wooded banks.

Excellent photos Four Winns! I have a downtown Pittsburgh shot like that from when I went there in 1999. We went up the Mon, but only there in Pittsburgh. I was with two old steel haulers, who couldn't get over how different the river is without all the mills along the north shore.

I wish they'd get that dang fountain at the Point up and running again. It would make the picture a lot better. It was out in September 2010 when I did the Pittsburgh-Louisville trip.

I really screwed up when I didn't stay a couple extra days this trip and cruise up the Alleghney to Lock 8. That's as far as one can go these days- it's only 69 miles. I had the time and the weather. I just didn't know that the distance was so short.
