I want to cross over to Olcott New York from the Whitby Marina, where I have a slip. I was worried that my 2006 Seadoo speedster 200 with a 40 gallon tank wouldn't make it on 1 tank. It seems after checking google earth that the trip is 36 miles across. According to seadoo's pdf, I could cruise for 3 hours and 23 minutes (they failed to mention speed or rpm). I did my math from previous trips and thought I couldn't make it but realized that I go full throttle most of the time and that sucks fuel huge! :(
Anyway, I am willing to go around 30 MPH across the lake, as long as I know I won't get stranded.
Anyone out there done this yet?
Thanks,
Steve

According to BoatTest.com the speedster should have about a 90 mile range at 5000 rpm or 30 mph.

You should make it with no problem with fuel. I'm sure you know but I wanted to say it anyway, make sure you pay attention to the weather as a smooth trip over can turn into a very rough dangerous ride back. Make sure you have the ability to wait out the weather and please travel with at least one other boat.

If your worried about your range, take an extra fuel container to be safe.

Re: Crossing Lake Ontario

There are some very effective rules for radius.
In order to be safe, you should have enough fuel to be able to return in adverse circumstances. The rule of fist for anything behind the horizon is to be able to reach your target with a third of your available fuel. The reason for this is simple. If wind, waves or current throw you of course you need up to two thirds of your fuel to reach your target.Sometimes bad weather forces you to return to your home base or a different harbor. You do not know where that is.Carry enough fuel to go by this rule of fist,or don't go!

I'm in Whitby-be careful crossing Lake O....doesn't get much wider than crossing from here so weather has time to 'pop up' on you an hour out.

Seen the lake go from little chop to SCARY in 15 minutes this summer-with nothing in weather forecast. Its the lower than normal jet stream, cold/hi pressure systems meeting overhead causing violent storms that are developing in Ontario....not like your getting a warning as storms move in from other areas.

Pick your day wisely to cross, and cancel if conditions aren't favourable.

I always run by the 1/3 rule.

1/3 of a tank out, 1/3 of a tank back and 1/3 of a tank to spare.

That last 1/3 of a tank may be the difference between life and death someday.
