I am in Canada, and wish to purchase a cowl from a guy in the US

How difficult a procedure is this? It is only a $20 item, so dont want to spend another 100 buck in duties, etc... ANyone have any personal experience with this?

Regards

Chris

Have him mail it to you and declare it as a birthday gift.

Re: Cross Border Shipping

The very first rule is to request absolutely NO shipping via UPS. They are world famous for 'dinging' you on brokerage fee's etc.
Ask him to send him via U.S.P.S (general post)....slow boat stuff but less expensive. This transfers over to Canada Post....equally slow boat.
The net result is you pay way less brokerage, you just have to wait a little longer.
That's been my experience.
Good Luck;):)

When I ship things to my friend Ken in Canada.

I write on the box " Warranty Repair."

He hasn't had to pay any taxes on anything I sent him so far. :)

+2 on shipping with USPS. :)

I had a small home business that made camera parts for antique cameras and I used to send stuff to Canada all the time, via USPS, on the declarations form, I simply wrote that it was a sample, nobody ever got dinged for any fee's at all.

NO UPS

Stay with US post office or fedex.

I shipped a 70 hp cowl to Toronto last year, $40, 4 days.

(UPS was quoting $240)

Anything $25 or less there is no duty charged, and sometimes if it under a $100 they do not even bother charging duty (to much effort)

And get them to send it in the USPS boxes if it fits it ships, CHEAP!!!!! (up to 70 pounds I think)

Refer to the USPS international shipping chart for Canada.

I've done the birthday and warranty thing, worked fine for the other person.

I bought a bunch of lead sinkers and the guy shipped them to me in USPS flat rate boxes... The postal carrier had fun, 2 little boxes, each pushing 70#:D

Re: Cross Border Shipping

Thanks for the tips.

For some reason or another he is hesitant to cross border ship. Need a relative in the US for stuff like this! Maybe the sister in law would be up for it ;)

Among other things It would be wise to write somewhere on shipping label: USED ITEM - NO COMMERCIAL VALUE.

Definitely go USPS. I've been burned many times UPS and some others.
