Crestliner splashwell vs. "space saver transom"...

I have an '88 18' Phantom (I think it's a Phantom)...and it has what I think they called the "Space Saver Transom".

It looks like an aluminum tub attached to the stern of the boat. Very handy and I like it. On another thread on the "Restoration" forum, the owner took this off and found that the actual "transom" in the stern of the boat was rotten.

I was wondering if that is a common problem with this design. Is there any way to tell if the transom is solid and safe without taking the whole thing apart?

thanks,

My 96 doesn't have any wood there to rot. The way mine is designed there is no way for water to get the transom unless a weld breaks loose.

I'd love to see a picture of that arrangement.
