Trying to make a long story short i have a new Stilletto 20 pitch 4 blade that's setup for mercruiser. I now have a volvo sx drive and am sitting here looking at this prop collecting dust. I was wondering if Prec could press in a volvo hub into this prop .........wild reach here but i am going to reach.......8)

Re: Crazy Stilletto prop question

Some will come out...some won't.
It depends on how well "stuck" the original hub is...
Many have been cracked (housings) by trying to punch out a good hub.....but, if anyone can do it PPI should know their own props.

Re: Crazy Stilletto prop question

8) Well now Precision is going to allow me to exchange this prop for one that fits a volvo ... fantastic news, a little delima here though.

The boat i now have is a Welcraft 186ss/s 18.6' 2800 lbs with a 8'beam and a 20 degree v, it is powered by a 4.3 efi(225hp) with a 1.66 gear ratio. The current prop is a 19p, the orignal prop was a 23p that was gone when i recieved the boat ( the 19 was a freebie)

I really have no exact number's as to its preformance other than it will run @ 50 using a very cheap water pressure type of speedo and the tach is being repaired by Faria so rpm is shall we say who knows? But hitting the rev limiter is really quite easy.

Can anyone recomend a Stilletto style aka Bay Pro or Advantage ll or lll?, having a 19 on i have all the grunt pulling power on could need, so i guess economy would be my first priority and speed second of maybe vice versa ................any suggestion's would be appreciated.

Edit: The boat really jump's om plane with the 19, @ 40 or above it really smooth's out in almost any chop (2-4') and last it does (the boat) start to make a low grumbling resonating type of growl above 45 and trimmed out.

According to an estimate from the Merc Prop Calculator, about a 22" ought to get you close.

Perhaps they will let you trade again if it's not right on...

Choices are

ADVANTAGE III 14 1/4 X 21 3blades

BAY PRO II 150+ HP 14 1/4 X 20 or 14 1/4 X 22 4 blades?

4 blade 22p seems to much 21 3 blade to little?

All said and done i would assume the 22 4
blade would be the same as 24p aluminum and that being a over kill.

Re: Crazy Stilletto prop question

I don't know anything about the Advantage III but if it were my boat I'd try a three blade 21" - like the Stilletto or Turbo 1. The only reason I can see that you would want a 4 blade is if you do a lot of wakeboarding.

Precision might help you with the choice...

Remember that you want to keep the RPM's near the top of the recommended range for your engine at wide open throttle.

Re: Crazy Stilletto prop question

Let's say...I have some figures for comparison's sake, but we don't know your TRUE numbers to compare to...
PPI would expect Dhadley or myself to make a recommendation based on figures of comparison...If you don't have any numbers, about 25 bucks a shot to exchange after the first one.
The Stiletto and Turbo are 2 completely different props, and I think we should stick with the stiletto at this point.
The Advantage III is for Bravo drives only..The advantage II will fit volvo SX and OMC SX drives.
I believe I would stay with a Advan. II and go with a 21P.
You can't really utilize the 4-blade unless you want lots of hole-shot and nothing else...we can't raise the drive to get the speed back, so I would think the 3-bld 21 would be close.
With that being said, I have no Idea what your max RPM was with the 19P, nor do I know the shape or wear on the 19P. You may want to wait on the prop until you have the tach back for reference.

Re: Crazy Stilletto prop question

Thanks for the reply's i know it was a feeble post, basically i was given a opportunity to exchange the prop for one that would work on this volvo drive, In the end i was given only one choice, that was to stay in the Baypro line up and the decision came down to a 20 or 22 pitch.

With today's low quality fuel and the combination of Efi i chose the 20, I know i will loose some top end but i wont be lugging the motor and i do run in some very rough water which i assume the 4blade will lend a hand in increasing bow lift keeping me on top of the chop.

8) Next season i will pickup up a enertia or what ever is the latest and greatest for maxium speed or econ, again thanks for the reply.

Re: Crazy Stilletto prop question

Based on your options, I'd say you made a good choice.
As for the latest, greatest designs...we got another Merc prop coming with the same alloy as the Enertia that is said to be even better....we'll see.

Re: Crazy Stilletto prop question

Well after a month or so waiting for gauges, they finally come back. In the interm i did go get a 22p baypro ll for peace of mind.

Running the 4 blade Baypro ll props, using a calibrated tach and gps the results were as follow's

1 person 215lbs & 200lbs weight & 37 gallons of gas

19 p Alum 49mph @ 5000 rpm hitting the rev limiter

20pss 54 mph @ 5000 rpm

22pss 53.5 mph @ 4400 rpm

Seems's the 20 pitch was indeed the right pitch, now as to how the boat preformed that is still under question, Both props made the boat handle smoother and @ 40 mph they also took the chop or made riding the chop much smoother or more comfortable.

However when running @ wot on smooth water the slightest wave would send the boat airbourn or start a chine walk. Kinda like spit on a griddle, Never the less im going to keep the 20p for all around boating, tubing sking etc, however i would like to know what kind of prop would be good for total top end speed. Both 4 blades wasted energy lifting the boat and i mean it does lift up out of the water,. any suggestions as to a 3 blade that would increase the speed, im sure i will be able to move this 4bl 22p prop to some one and i might as well get a high speed prop just because i can............ lol

Re: Crazy Stilletto prop question

I think you'll be looking in the 21P area. You're getting alot of bow-lift with the Baypro and I "think" that is causing the bounce(porpoise). If this occures at low trim levels, the Stiletto advantage in a 21 may be the best option....The Turbo has a bit more lift, but the Baypro likely has just a tad more with the 4th blade...depends how you are trimming.
After looking back at how the boat is performing, I think if I went to the 3-bld, I'd stay with the Stiletto..it appears you have plenty of bow-lift as it is..

Re: Crazy Stilletto prop question

Yes you are right in regard's to lift, im really on top of the water, looking back at the wake there nothing is coming from the side's it's straight out the back,

I am not well trained in the terminolgy but i dont believe it's doing the porpoise, if running @ wot and i hit say a series (3) of 8-10" rolling swell's it will go airborne, the bow does not dip, it seems to landon it's transom creating a rocking left to right kinda like sharp fishtailing of a motor cycle and if you dont slow or let the stern down some it will get a bit scary. dont know if this makes any difference or not. As far as trimming i cannot trim it to far or she will start a low freq growl, but when trimmed for max speed its smooth as silk .............cant do a sharp turn it will lose it's bite fairly quick.

Re: Crazy Stilletto prop question

What you are describing sounds a bit like chine-walking...
The low "growl" is exhaust noise...normal..means the prop is getting closer to the surface.
Turning and venting is also normal..just plan on trimming in some before a turn.
Have you ever considered smart-tabs?
If you want, PM me and I'll give ya my phone number....I'm very interested in getting the clear picture on what this boat is doing...I'd like to know for sure it's not bow-steering.

Re: Crazy Stilletto prop question

That could be a possability it does a very sharp deep v, its worthless at idle wanders more than a gypsy. Yes i do have tab's, i have not installed them, for the very fact the boat (stern) rides so high now i really dont know where to place them, i was waiting to take a pic of the boat on high plane just to see how far up it really is.

Bow steer at speed that is new, however i did try to level out the boat when it started its little dance by steering in the opposite direction (very suttle i assure you) it only made the tail waggle worse. If im nosing in that could make sense by exagerating the tourque., but again i looked back at the wake to see what kind of print was being made and how far it was out of line, and there was very little disturbance, no noticable increase how far the boat was digging in just a wiggle type of line.

Anyway's pm sent however i will not be able to get back on the water until this coming tuesday.

Little side note, my depth finder will not display the bottom type when im @ wot aka usallay it will display a solid bottom but at speed its all broken up it will show depth i think its right but the bottom info is uselss and the transducer is 6" from the bottom of the v/

Re: Crazy Stilletto prop question

The transducer needs to be a minumum of 14" from the center-line.
When the boat does this "side to side" movement, is it slow, and the nose wants to wander with it? Or, is it just a rocking from side to side.
Again, you "may" be getting too much stern-lift...by what you are saying.."usually" with too much bow-lift, the porpoising starts.
How far can you trim out, and how does that affect the total ride.

Re: Crazy Stilletto prop question

Ok well here's some pic's of the setup
Picture031-1.jpg

Picture032-1.jpg

That's fully trimmed out, anyhigher and she will growl or the prop lose's it biteTrimming out the drive makes quite a bit of diff she just lifts up and really smoothes out, wake goes directly out the back of the boat none on the side of the boat at all. After the conversations i will be installing tab's tonight, If you notice anything wrong with there placement (heavy red lines) plz advise. That thin red line is the water line @ wot, the fish finder will read depth but not the bottom at full power slow here down to 40 and shes works like a charm
