Re: Crappie Fishing/Best Method?

I have a couple of deep coves that I head to with a lot of blow downs. Fish the blow downs with a small live minnow hooked like I do for trout - use a large needle to pull the loop in your line through the minnow from the anul cavity to the mouth. Attach line to hook and pull hook through body of minnow (from back to front)and make sure there is a small bend in the minnow so it spins when reeling. Small split is placed about 2 feet up the line. Cast to the blowdown and let sink to almost bottom and reel in slllloooooowwwwllllly - get ready to set the hook because if there are any crappie in the area they will soon be on your hook!

I like to use slip bobbers with a small jighead and minnows. There is couple great lakes where im from and there is a lot of brush. What I do use my trolling motor to sneak up on the brush and with a long rod drop the minnow in to holes in the brush/downed trees. I have caught huge slabs this way. early morning and evening the best times.

Re: Crappie Fishing/Best Method?

Hi mth54. There's no sure way to catch crappie, but my wife and I have good days and bad days when fishing for crappie. It's never the same each day. We use 'crappie jigs', or worms (mini crawlers). We like to fish under the docks at the Port of Sacramento. We do good when the tide's coming in sometimes. If you can find them, they are fun to catch, especially the 3+ pounders.

Sometimes we fish with bobbers and other times it's tight lined. My wife likes to fish tight lined cause she feels the fish when they strike. I've found that black/chartreuse is a good color. My wife will try anything once and if she finds something they like, then I'll change up. Crappie will bite just about anything, just depends on what they want. We have not used minnows for years, since we get great action on the artificial bait. We use triple ripple, squirmin squirts, crappie grubs, etc. Check out the web site for 'Pro Bass Shops' we get a lot of our supplies from the.

We like to fish where there is brush or logs, etc., in the water. That holds the fish. A lot of people move them out of the way - bad idea, as that will scar the fish away. Just drop your jig right down in the middle of what ever is in the water and jiggle it a little. If you don't get a hit, move it. If you fish tight lined, try letting the jig (or bait), fall to the bottom and then reel up slow, stop and bounce you jug a little and let sit for a second or two. If nothing hits it, reel up a little more and do the same thing. Do this until you reach the top, and if nothing, throw somewhere else.

Another way is to throw your jig out and just start reeling very slow, and flicking a little. Practice makes perfect! :D You'll learn control the more you do it. The trick is to real in slow. ;)

Good luck!

Re: Crappie Fishing/Best Method?

I have found one way that I catch crappie 99% of the time. I take a 1/16th oz Road Runner ( different colors for different water conditions) and tip it with a minnow ( the smaller the better ) and turn the trolling motor on 2 ( out of 5) and throw the bait and let about 30-40 feet out behind the boat. Once I find out the depth and color they are biting on, I put out about 5 more rods. This method is called Spider Trolling. You can do a search on it on any search engine. This is a tried and proven method. This is the only way I fish for Crappie, except during the spawn. I fish this way all year long and catch all year long, even when it is 20 degrees outside.

Spider trolling with a drop-shot rig works very well too, you just have to go slower, and dont get to cover as much water that way.

To you all ,have read your ideas and made mental note of them all.I remember how soft there mouths are too.My dad always told me ,don't hit them so hard you'll ripp there lips off.I think one of my problems is he took me out fishing the slabs ,and catching them but i didn't realize how he was rigging,or working them .Dad made it seem simple, and i was young enough not to pay attention to his tallent. Thanks for your tips,i will try to catch them using your advice ,and when i master it, make sure to pay tribute to the all of you, when i enjoy a mess :p

Nathan, where are you located in relation to White county ,my wifes family are all still in Searcy area.

May the fishin god be with you all!

mth54 Pink at night sailors delight,Pink in the morning sailors take warning! ;)

Ice Fishing for crappie with a Vexilar is my preferred method. Five months to go and counting.

Re: Crappie Fishing/Best Method?

White county is almost dead center of the state, and Washington county is in the north west corner of the state. I guess Im about 4 hours from there.

It is a common mis-conception that Crappie have mouths so soft that you can rip them with all but the most gentle hook set. While Crappie do have soft mouths, it is not the hookset that tears them, it is the equipment. Improper equipment is what tears their mouths, like stiff rods. If you saw me Crappie fishing, you would think I was bass fishing as hard as I set the hook, but I use a 7ft ultra-light, and I have yet to lose a fish due to an overbearing hook set. It takes a rod with a lot of back bone, and a very flimsey tip.

Re: Crappie Fishing/Best Method?

Nathan and mth54,
I live in Searcy, AR and fish White river especially the old river oxbows near Georgetown, just out of Searcy. I love jig fishing with a 13 ft crappie pole, black and red or black and chartruse colored jigs. Grandpa was a minnow fisherman, here's a tip, use small to medium sized minnows and add 4-5 drops of red food coloring to your minnow bucket, that turns the minnows a reddish orange color and crappies can see'em better and get ready for some action... I usually start about 8 - 10 ft and jig up til I find where they are suspended, if the action slowes, I crank up the trolling motor and grab a coke and ease around and listen to the turkeys gobble, man it's heaven....

Re: Crappie Fishing/Best Method?

Try using a medium size beatle spin. The best lure in the world. Great for bass and crapies and also catches Walleyes and Northerns. I like chartuse and black or orange and black. Tie it on your line about 20 feet behind boat and troll till you get a strike. Kill motor and cast all around area doing slow retrieval. I like 6 lb extra limp line and light weight gear. If you find them and they are more than 10 feet deep go to tube jigs and slip bobbers.
Good luck

aka Turkey gobblers, but them cottonmouths do hang out on those overhanging limbs just off the bank...kinda touchy when your running trotlines. Keep the paddle close by...

Here I fish mostly at night. Use the pontoon boat with shop lights hung over the sides and between the toons. Run a genset to power. Fish with minnows and jigs. Average night we get 100-150 fish. Check your local laws. Its legal to "light up" the boat here at night.

Re: Crappie Fishing/Best Method?

Well to all of you, we started catching the allusive crappie, used a little spider trolling, tried minnows, tried jigs. Finally got them to go for night crawlers just where the water gets about 15 feet, that is where we started hitting them.I'll tell you what a trip,we been catching blue gill ,perch and some spuradic walleye in the same area and have never got them bugger crappie ever in that area. Thanks its great.

Pink at night sailors delight,Pink in the morning sailors take warning!

I fish at night and use a green underwater light. Find out where the thermocline is, locate a creek channel or some other structre (brush), and fish about a foot above it with minnows. This works good in the hotter months.

Re: Crappie Fishing/Best Method?

perchjerker,i'll have to check the State laws i In. for under water lights,I don't think we can do that here,we can use lights but only certain ways.
miloman ,i,m going to have to try some of those grubs,i've already added 2 lbs. to my tackle box with jigs and such that the other posters have told me about.I'm going to have to find that right combo for the lake i fish, but all these ideas are great.
The water temp yesterday was 81 degrees so im going to look for the deep cold spots like perchjerker spoke of.

Later,think I'm goin fishin,like i've been wishin!

mth54-Pink at night sailors delight,Pink in the morning sailors take warning!
