Crankshaft position sensor

Hi all, I've got a 2006 Tahoe Q4 with a 4.3L Mercruiser engine and I had a friend looking at my engine to identify an oil leak when he mentioned I was missing a sensor just behind the harmonic balancer. I looked it up and found that's where my crankshaft position sensor is supposed to be.. But it's not there. It looks just like an empty spot to screw something in. Is this normal? He's a car guy (and I know very little) and wasn't sure if boats needed one or not. I read somewhere it could be located elsewhere. Any advice? Thank you!

Or your engine is carbureted.;) We'll need your engine serial number to tell you what you have for sure.

Item # 9 would be the area if it's MPI, http://www.mercruiserparts.com/Show...br=110&bdesc=Front+Cover+and+Circulating+Pump

My S/N is 0W638466. I looked it up and the diagram shows it there. Thanks all for the responses!

Nope your engine serial number shows you have a carbureted engine so your engine won't utilize a crankshaft sensor....But if it's not installed or not blocked off then yes you could have an oil leak right there.

Great, thank you! I will not have a chance to look closely at it again until this weekend - if it isn't blocked off, how would I do that? Am I correct in thinking that Part # 11 on that list is the screw that plugs the hole, or is it the sensor itself that would've filled the hole? $8 for one screw..
