I'm chasing an electrical problem that's causing idling issues, I am by myself and am wondering for the tests that call for cranking motor, is there any harm in jumping the motor from solenoid to starter? Thanks for any help, electrical is not up my alley

I have an old, burned out timing light with a built-in starter switch I use for exactly what you're talking about, Moto. If it isn't handy, a screwdriver works,

Thank you GA boater, I appreciate the help! Not sure why but always feel I'm gonna burn up solenoid testing that way. Thanks for the reassurance!

I only jump the first couple of dozen times when the starter clacks and the sparks fly.

You could also buy a starter switch for less than 10 bucks at the AP store. Add a couple of alligator clips and some wire, No more sparks.

Yes like GA_Boater stated, buy a push switch and put two wires on it with the alligator clips and then you can simply clip the switch to the battery positive terminal on the starter solenoid and the little terminal that the normal ignition wire goes to. Then with long enough wire leads, you can stand anywhere around the engine and start it up. But that only works IF you have the ignition key turned to "on". Otherwise all you will accomplish is spinning the starter but not starting. Just remember to turn the ignition key "off" when done. I actually think they sell such a starter switch setup in the auto parts stores in the help department display items already made. Check for it and see. JMHO!

I always take the spark plugs out when doing my testing, you get better results with your readings.
