Hi flexon guy
My parts manual shows your model a 1957 sportwin uses a carbon type crank case seal. This type seal has a carbon round thing with an o-ring inside. It is heeld in place with washers, a spring and a snap ring. This type seal needs no sealer. If found to be leaking, just replace the o-ring. Be carefull not to break the carbon part it is fragil.

Rodbolt, I just double checked (I do screw up once in a while). Yes the parts manual for 1957 sportwin defenatly shows and calls for carbon type main seals both top and bottom. Flexons motor may be different now, do to any number of reasons.

Hey guys

It appears to be a carbon seal. It at least feels like it maybe. I might try the 3M sealant anyway. What do you think? Can't hurt anything.

Hi Flexon
The 3M sealer is the same as sealer 1000. It is to be used as directed and for the same applications. Do not use any type of sealant with the carbon type seals. I guess the olny thing it could hurt is just your whole engine. If this engine has good compression and runs reasonably well, main seals may not need replaced. Look into other areas first. Once you have eveything else tuned up then look at the seals for a problem. If there is a obvious seal problem, then just change out the o-ring inside the carbon holder thing. If the carbon part is broken, it is time for a quest to obtain a new one. Fifty year old parts can be a challenge to find.

alcan

Thanks I will not use the sealer here on the carbon seal. The guy who sold me the 3m adhesive suggested that I do. I am glad that you posted an answer. This could have saved me much problems.
