Crank seal -how common ????

I'm looking at a 1988 Suzuki 85 horse engine. The owner claims that the crank seal is gone because of an intermittent rough idling and rough running problem. Just how common is this on these motors??? I've been around 2 strokes for a lot of years and have yet to see this problem. He claims that's what his mechanic diagnosed the problem as. My thought is that it probably is something else. My thought is that if that's what it was, it wouldn't be an intermittent problem but would do it all the time. What do you experts think ????

you are correct ... with a broken crank seal the motor will not idle at all, it will only run if you give it alot of revs ......
