Hey guys have a 1994 Skeeter and located a small hairline stress crack on the hull the other day. It may have been there for some time now, and does not appear to be causing leaking etc... How can I tell if this more serious than just a surface crack in the gelcoat, what do i look for? Also where should I really be concerned of a stress crack forming on a hull. If its more than a surface crack can it be fixed?

i wonder if there is a product made for this but i agree with the above in that they probably are only cosmetic and i've never seen a not new boat without them. You couyld probably find a clear liquid sealant to give you some peace of mind.

Re: Cracks in the Gelcoat HELP

How long is it? Could be from impact, or maybe the gel is too thick there. I'd say it was structural if it ran a long length where a stringer or bulkhead is. That'd indicate stringer/bulkhead damage/rotting/delaminating. If the hull were delaminating there, you'd see a large series of cracks and more than likely some chunks of gelcoat missing...not to mention you could press on the hull and often times see flex with hand pressure alone. Most boats with some use on them have some hairline cracks around the boat, including the bottom but you usually can't see them too well because of bottom paint.

A bastardized combination of "ah" and "yeah" commonly used by old cronies from Maine who have nothing better to do than whittle wood in front of a convenience store waiting to be written into a Stephen King novel.

Let's put it this way - the word "Ayuh," is often used in a sentence making reference to the town of Ban-go-ah, or Ba-ha-ba. Ayuh!

I have family in Maine so knew right away about the Ayuh.

I found this thread searching for cracks in the topside.
