Hey again, I was looking over my boat that i picked up and noticed a couple of cracks in the gel coat along the top. I'm guessing this is bad and would require a new gel coat? I am new to boating, so I did not even think to look at this type of stuff, luckily I didn't pay too much. Beginning to think this boat I picked up is going to be more of a project than it's worth. Not that I wouldn't mind putting the time and $ in, I would if this is definitely the boat I would want long term and that I can't answer. Pics below...you suggestions?

Re: Cracks in the Gel Coat

Hi. Minor cracks in the gelcoat are not a problem - mainly a cosmetic issue. If you have a lot of cracks concentrated in one area ( transom for example) then that could indicate a structural problem. If they're just scattered around, don't worry about them.

If it is only sparatic cracking, is there anything that should be done to seal the cracks to either prevent them from getting worse, or to prevent any damage

There are lots of gelcoat repair products available. I've used them to repair chips but am not pleased with the cosmetic appearance of the repair. It's difficult to get a good color match. I would leave the cracks alone and only repair them IF they get worse. My opinion - others may disagree.

some of the buffing products will smooth over small cracks. Patching will make it worse.

Nothing to worry about where those little cracks are; won't affect anything.
Spend your time and money taking care of the mechanical systems and ENJOY your boat.
