I recentley recevied a 12 foot fiberglass sears 1979 boat. I bought a honda 9.9 short shaft for it since the rated horsepower is 10. A few days ago i noticed that there were two cracks in the transom and one along the side. What can I use too fix this boat. Or will it be ok to leave it alone. I usually bring it out in the bay and it can get a little rough out there so could this also be the problem. Is there any boats that I can purchase to use with this motor that will peform well in the bay and also be good for fishing. Thanks

Re: Cracks in 12 foot boat

A 9.9 is the right size motor for your boat. Lets see - - you have two cracks in the transom and one in the hull and you are considering using it without doing anything - -

The repair would depend on the extent of the cracks which we cant tell from your description. If you want to repair it, spend some time in the Project Boats section of this site and also try the Search function.

Lotsa boats would be suitable. Consider alumnium rather than fiberglass due to weight.

Ping,

Good advice from SoLittle.

Try this:

Tilt the engine up and lock it in place with the trailering lock.

Grab the bottom of the engine, below the prop, and push up and down on it.

Does the transom flex a lot? If so, you have two options.

1. Fix the transom.

2. Find another boat.

then again, when the honda goes corkscrewing down to the bottom, take comfort in the fact that the rest of the boat will float!

little cracks I fill with marine tex

bigger ones get sold to someone else, and I get a boat with little cracks again (yes I tell them WHY shes being sold, lol)
