hey guys, i have a small 16' trailer which i just replaced the hub bearings in...while changing the bearings i noticed a crack in the top leaf out of 3 leafs total. I only trailer a half mile from my house and idk if i should change the spring or just leave it alone? your advice would be appreciated!

Yes, you need to replace broken leaf springs. It is dangerous to let them go, particularly for the guy behind you.

Dangerous! The top leaf is the one that connects to the trailer frame through the mounts. When it lets go your axle will no longer be connected to your trailer. I wouldn't want to be anywhere near that disaster. Fix it or lose it, the latter being the more expensive choice.

Yes. Replace broken leaf spring ASAP. Also.... Replace both leaf springs - to ensure both are matching in size, weight and steel batch mixture.

Leaf springs snap because of 3 main reasons. They are:
A - Old age. Any leaf springs 15+ old should be replaced. Any leaf spring 20+ age must be replaced. If wondering, leaf springs become brittle overtime. And even a simple bump or double railway tracks will snap a leaf. Just like human bones, older age = more brittle.
B - Improper weight sizing. Was reading my boat trailer manual the other day and it recommended the 80% rule. re: Only load leaf spring and tire ratings up to 80%. Thus, allowing 20% buffer for extra deep bumps / double railway tracks. If your boat + trailer = 3.200 lbs (scale weight), then install leaf spring packs for 3,600 lbs trailer. Thus, creating that 20% buffer.
C - Poor steel mixture. Some leaf spring metals are better than others. Thus, only buy leaf springs from suspension suppliers that have high quality reputations. Cheap selling parts sometimes = cheap quality parts. Thus, always best to research product and supplier before buying.

With above in mind, do replace your broken leaf ASAP. And, apply other tips as well...

Hope this helps...
