Hi all, I have a 2004 3.0L Merc with Alpha One Gen 2. I cracked the gimbal ring after running over a log. I did some calling around and a few places recommended that I just replace the entire transom assembly. Their reasoning was that the lower unit is nearly 10 years old and a lot of that stuff is due to be replaced soon anyway so it makes sense to just replace the entire transom instead of the gimbal ring alone.

Does that sound reasonable?

Also, for the repair I was quoted $2,250 for parts and $840 for labor. Is that pretty reasonable?

Thanks in advance!

Ayuh,... The Lower Unit isn't a part of the Transom Assembly,....
It bolts to the upper, makin' a sterndrive, which bolts onto the transom assembly,...

I'd go with a used gimbel ring, 'n Rebuild yer transom assembly with all those things that are needin' replacin',....
Then there's no reason to pull the motor, it's all done outside the hull,...

If they charge $80.00 an hour that's a 10.5 hour job. Sounds about right if the mechanic isn't distracted when doing the repairs.

Bondo is right though, why replace stuff thats still ok,most of it is fixable,I've seen/had older than that which were still fine. Now saltwater is a different animal,I only have freshwater units.
