Hey All

I have inherited a 1984 Champ with a 99 Johnson 200. The housing right above the prop is cracked in a v shape about an inch down both sides. Any idea what caused this type of crack and is this something that is in need of replacement before operation? The engine runs well out of the water and the prop seems to spin true but im a little worried to put it in the water with this crack. To my knowledge it has been cracked awhile and out fishing fairly recently. Thanks in advance

Any idea what would cause that? Don't want it to have been a mechanical malfunction that caused it. Thanks for the input.

If you remove the bottom drain plug you can see if it has a magnetic pick up on it, If it does and you have a lot of metal on it it might mean you have had a mechanical malfunction. Looks more to me like something may of caught in the prop and whacked it.

If you drain out the gear box fluid, not sure if you know, but you need to pump it back up from the bottom to get it filled correctly.
If it doesnt have a drain plug with a magnetic tip you can strain it through a rag and look for metallic bits.

Good luck, 200hp is a nice motor

Seems to shift forward and reverse fairly smooth when out of water, throttles up as well. Its aluminum correct? Is this something I can weld or is the only answer a new lower? Thanks

If you take prop off you will see the 2 tabs that hold carrier in, I would not trust welding as aluminum weld is weaker than the casting. Best bet is to find a used housing that has been alignment checked as they do warp or buy a SEI unit...

So after researching I guess the SEI units are made In china? Or with Chinese parts? Any ideas on who to buySEI from? Want to compare prices. There are a few ebay stores selling johnson/evinrude remans fully tested for around 1k. Thanks
