Cracked Exhaust Housing

I have a 1981 25hp Evinrude. So today when I was running the boat I noticed it started vibrated excessively so I turned the motor off and tilted it up to check if something was wrapped around the prop. This is when I noticed the crack in the exhaust housing. Photos attached?

What should I do? Can it be repaired? Does the exhaust housing have to be replaced? Any advice? Thanks

Greg

You could have it welded, but if it doesn't come out in perfect alignment, you will break a drive shaft or wear out the splines. I'd replace it if it were mine.

According to shop.evinrude.com the housing is not available!

So the choice is between welding the old one or finding a motor being broken for parts.

From the looks of the pictures it is cracked on both sides and the cracks are pulled out of alignment (not simple crack that is still level from one side to the other) even a great welder would be hard pressed to get that back within specs better to find a replacement to avoid significant headaches later.

I'd weld it. Weld shops are pretty good at stuff like that and it would be relatively easy to line up the outer housing to make sure it was all aligned. Unless you find a spare cheap.

No idea how it happened huh? Did you hit anything? It looks like it'd need a fair impact to do that.

Also with the noise and symptoms you mentioned I would also check for drive shaft spline connectoin damage. If these are damaged it may cost far less (time and money/parts) to find a good used replacement.

It sound as if this crack was caused by internal failure as opposed to submereged object strike.
