My engine guy tells me i will need a new block for my 1999 vovlo penta 190hp inboard. It is a chev vortec v6. What can I expect to pay for a reman, and is there something better to put in its place?

Re: cracked block?

why did it crack, did it freeze or something? After knowing why, you can then proceed to replace. If its fuel injected I'd stay with the v6 alot of $ would be needed to change up to a v8 and would you need it, what kind of boat and activities? Was it used in fresh? What else did the mechanice say about the problem. If you know why it cracked and its a low use motor, get a short block, the heads are still good. Vortec heads are a little pricey. Or if you get a good total crate motor cost keep the heads or sell them on ebay.
