Cracked bell housing

I have a cracked bell housing. I need a replacement bell housing for the 1973 mercruiser can't seem an exact fit can I upgrade to something else with out switching the whole Gimbal housing

No. As the design of the bell housing is coupled to that of the gimbal ring and gimbal housing, you can't use a later one.
