Hello everyone,

New to the site and have been reading for a while. I have an older 22' Century fishing boat with a 250 inline 6 mercruiser and a merc outdrive, After taking it out yesterday for a few hours I noticed a small crack on the lower unit housing when I was flushing it. Just bought this boat and don't know if it was there before or not. There is no fluid coming out of the crack. The fluid on the housing is from a ram that's leaking. Anyone know what this can be from and what should I do about it?

Thanks,
Johnny

Freeze damage.
Won't hurt the drive, but there is a drain hole on the other side of the drive that's plugged up that kept the water in there to begin with.

Ok I'll go look. Thanks. What about having it welded? Don't want it to crack even more.

you remove the lower unit, clean the cavity with various tool, long drills, coat hangers, welding rods untill you reach the hole.green area

Re: Crack in Merc outdrive help plz.

then everytime you drop the lower unit for whatever service you make sure its still clear. Stay out of mud and sand.
Just remember that leaving water or wet stuff in there to freeze can crack the drive internally and you lose the oil.
You goy lucky, the pressure went outward and not inward.
