Cowling insulation on 92' 200 XP

My cowling on my 200hp XP, 92 model does not have any insulation in it and as you can guess it is very loud. Can I put insulation in it without causing heat problems with the engine? If I can does anyone have any suggestions on what to use that would be the best to cut down on the noise?

You can use 3/8 " carpet pad material got from any building supply store and use contact cement to adhere.
