2 cycle, how do i do it and since i bet it hasn't been done in years, is it possible that the starting fault is that i should spray/clean/wd40/? inside and then try to asscertain what is wrong?
thanks,
mike
Mikey - Your post is not clear. If you can't get the cover off how would you get WD40 inside?

I was given a 1975 9.9 years ago and the latch that holds the cover on was frozen. I ended up cutting the case with a saw to get the cover off. Later I fiberglassed it back together and used bondo to smooth the rough spots. Added a touch of auto spray paint and it is passable.
I think you're asking "how do I remove the cowling (motor cover)" literally right???
Most outboard motors have a latch at the rear of the motor and under the cowling. Pull down to release the latch and the cover will tilt up and off. Sorry if I'm assuming the wrong thing here.
thanks, that is what i am/was wondering...
guess i'll go back and fiddle with the latch and see if i am pushing/pulling it the wrong way...
this has set outside at a bouy in puget sound for at least 10 years...the rubber(gasket) on it is pretty much toast and i would guess it needs substainle tlc/cleaning/oiling/plug/etc...
might be the starter switch is 'merely' dirty/corroded and if i can get it off- might be able to clean it up and do some basic maintenance...the prior owners had a 'try until it starts/use until done/turn off' maintenance plan...probably should find a way to run some fresh water through it too...
thanks again
