Couple more questions for you old motor geniuses,

Under the cap of my motor where the motor is is pretty dirty. What is the best way to clean out all the gunk?

Also it seems like its alot of oil splatter. Is something leaking and if so what might be leaking?

The motor runs but needs some TLC. Dont know what kind of mantinance the previous owner preformed on it other than put new plugs and wires on it. Just want to know what I should do to make it run another 50 years.
Thanks again guys!

a degreaser type soap, in spray bottle, and a gentle water hose, small brush. get it cleaned, then run it in a tank, leg has to be submerged 1/2 way up. see if it is throwing oil. that's first and a compression check to be sure you have a good base to work on. if everything is good. change ingition guts under flywheel points, coils, condenser, plug wires, carbs clean and rebuilt, adjustments in the engine faq. change lower lube, service the water pump. should be good for another life. also make sure it shifts and stay in gear, before spending on it

Luke, Clean up the dissy cap as TD suggests. Make sure the points are filed clean and square. As long as they are adjustable to spec, and clean and square, they are serviceable. Set both sets of points to open just as the timing marks match. A continuity meter is best to get them adjusted. If you have a weak spark, check the coil (inside the dissy) for cracks in the plastic, and replace it if they are found.

BTW - if the plugs have a greenish tinge the motor is overheating. Clean the fuel filter screen, and check the hoses for cracks.

all his stuff in under flywheel. these are shot coils on a 58 35 hp but under your flywheel is very similar. you will need a harmonic balancer puller to remove flywheel.

pulling flywheel.

As for the oil around the engine, very likely the upper crankshaft seal is leaking. You will see this when you look at the ignition stator plate, and not uncommon on an engine of this age. Seal is easy to replace, but takes a special seal remover, and driver. If the seal needs replacement, and you don't have the tools, save yourself some grief, have a dealer do it.
