Hello,

I'm going to look at a pontoon this evening that is powered by a 1988 Mercury 70 hp engine. I've got three simple questions:

1. How do I remove the lid or cover of the engine? The first time I seen the boat I just did a quick run around and forgot to look close enough. Reason I ask is it will be getting close to dark when I arrive and don't wanted to waste any time messing around.

2. In what range should the engine's compression be to be classified as good?

3. What is the gas:eek:il ration on this particular engine? Really, how many ounces of oil will I need to add to my five gallon tanks?

-Thanks

the compression should be even somewhere in the 130's and even maybe higher . do a search here on fuel mix and be careful turning over engine with plug wires disconnected. fuel + spark = fire. ground the plug wires when you have the gauge in so the spark does not jump around which is no good for expensive electrical parts. when running the motor should be pumping water .you should be able to touch the engine block and feel it's not running hot
