25 hp elr 1014855 2006 2 stroke Runs great full speed but will cough and die at idle. Does this mean dirty carbs? Wonder when Yamaha and others do away with rubber hoses???? Thanks for any help. Oh yeh, when I bought it they suggested stay on 50-1 but the book says 100-1 mixture. What do the pros say? bsandy

Re: cough and die at idle

Hi their I have been through alot with my 90 2 stroke Yam. and done alot of talking to the pros and have learned that 95% of engine problems result in dirty carbs I sure learned the hard way. I would suggest using a 50-1 mixture just to be on the safe side espically with the ethanol fuel these days. I would also replace the fuel lines and clamps. I have personally seen the gas eat them up inside in just one season. Make sure your Primer buld is also in good shape. Test it by removing the fuel line coming froming the tank and squeezing the bulb to see if it pumps fuel back towards the tank if it does them it needs to be replaced.I personally am running NON-ETHANOL gas in mine the new gas these days is killing 2 strokes left and right I have lost two chainsaws in one day due to that stuff HATE IT. Also make sure to check your Idle RPM Speed and the specs on the idle mixture screw. Also check your Idle Ignition timming but I would be betting that you have a dirty carb and dirty fuel line issue.

Sounds like your low speed jets in the carb might have some crud in them.
