I have a 4.5 merc that is 31 years old. The impeller has gone bad. Is it worth getting fixed? What kind of cost am I looking at. The motor sat in a basement for almost 30 years. I ran it in a barrel and it ran ok, except sometimes the pee hole would not have a stream, just steam. It later ran ok, then it did stop again and no stream comes out at all. Help.

thanks.

do it yourself. total cost 12 dollars.

total time 30 minutes.

total value when all is said and done, still maybe not much.

Fix for sure. Even if you pay to have it done. It won't cost that much.

I would consider replacing the impeller maintenance on an outboard.
its like changing the oil in your car.

As long as the lower unit comes off, you're In Like Flint.

Lots of these older Mercs had bad habit of freezing the driveshaft in the crank, then it's Lotsa Fun to get apart.

If it comes apart easily, it's well worth the trouble to fix. One nut on the outside fwd end of the lower unit, and one nut from up underneath the 'anti-ventilation' plate and down she comes!

Get good prices on replacement parts at www.boatfix.com

They have an application page for Merc's, just plug in your motor's HP and Ser # range and it'll give you parts info:
