i have an alpha 1 gen 2 outdrive and noticed gear lube in the bilge. a pressure test showed the seals around the driveshaft leaking. usually i wrench my own boat but dont want to mess with the upper gears. can anyone give me an approx. price that it would cost to have the upper drive resealed? i am just looking for a ballpark before sending it out so i can decide if i will undertake it myself. thanks

Re: cost to reseal upper gears

had a local guy reseal the upper. cost $450 and this included a new yoke. he stated that the yoke was pitted and that caused the bad seal. seemed like a reasonable price to me. i am back on the water and the boat runs GREAT!!!!

Re: cost to reseal upper gears

the seal on horiz shaft is a common Alpha failure and very easy to fix. Provided gears and brgs are ok(any metal on magnetic plug?)you just need to remove the large castellated nut and the whole upper assembly removes. Best you get a manual to see exactly what to do.Hint you can make a wrench for the casellated nut out of a piece of 1/8 aluminum scrap. If the seal surface on yoke is bad get a speedi sleeve maybe $20 or $30 often brg suppliers stock that sleeve its quite common.
This job is VERY easy and might take an hour. Be sure to look for other issues at same time, often(usually)if only symptom was oil in boot, the seal repair will fix it.
