Re: corrision in frsh water
i have a aluminum boat with a mercruiser and a tohatsu kicker and both motors are corriding on the lower unit someone said that the battery has to be grounded to the aluminum boat anybody shed some light on this.
#1 do you leave it in a marina?
#2 Is shore power used on it?
#3 Do you leave a
auto battery charger hooked up and chargeing when you are not there? which is a no no because auto and marine chargers are diff.
Your drives should be bonded to the negetive side of the battery. Do not ground the battery to the boat and think this is ok.
If you trailer your boat and don't leave it in the water for extended periods, anodes or the lack of the right ones are not the problem.Fresh water = Magnesium. Salt =Zinc. and brackish=aluminum. This is usually a sign of electrical leakage on yours or someone elses boat near you. A galvanic isolater helps to control this.
Google galvanic corrosion. There is a ton of info out there and what causes it and how to handle it.
