I have to replace the starter on my 40C. While searching for a new starter motor I think that the starter I have now is the incorrect one.
The starter I have now is a Hitachi S 108-98. and while looking on API marine there crossreference part # is the MOT5011N which in their catalog shows is for a Nissan 30hp not a 40.

Is the starter I have now incorrect for my motor (undersized)? Or is the API catalog wrong?

please advise!!!!

Because 3 of 5 starters replaced aren't broke I would like to know why you believe you need a new starter.

Re: correct starter for NS40C

the starter stopped spinning completely while on the motor. It would only click. When I removed the cowling there was smoke comming from the top of the starter and the starter was so hot that it had started bubbling the paint and manufacture's sticker off the side.(yes I was cranking for a long time trying to get the motor to turn over). once the starter cooled off enough you could touch it I removed it and began taking it apart to see what might have caused the issue. Both the top and bottom bushings were wore out and egg shaped. allowed nearly 1/4" of play at the upper end of the drive gear. this also has caused one of the 3 brushes at the bottom of the starter to be worn approx 20% more than the other 2 (positive brush). Also one of the electro magnets on the inside of the body has been heavily worn not into the windings but close. The heat caused all of the internal paint to melt off and the majority of the non conductive coating on the armature (sp) to be melted away. When I began to check the points on the bottom of the armature for continuity over half have either lost connection totaly or partially.

I replaced the bushings and cleaned armature as best as I could and reassembled the starter. Now when power is applied to the starter it will only spin when assisted, spins slowly, and can be stopped easily with your finger and thumb.

The 30A and 40C use the same starter...Beware rebuilt starters. They never last as long as the Hitachi OEM starters.
