Correct prop?

I am completing major overhaul of 1960 Evinrude 5.5hp Fisherman Model 5520. The pitch cast into the prop hub is 5.5, not the 7.25 pitch specified in the factory parts list for prop part number 376968. The prop I have is 8" diameter like the one specified. I do not want to damage the newly overhauled powerhead and wonder if this might cause problems. Please provide input.

Re: Correct prop?

If your turning too much prop the plug (s) usually turn black and foul long before engine damage.

Re: Correct prop?

Final prop size would depend on your typical load boat size and type.
The best thing would be to get a Tach like a Tinytach.Reasonable,
easy to install and will work on any motor. They have a web site.
A gps speed would be good to have as well. The motor is rated at 4000 rpm and the range is 3500 to 4500 rpm.
Of course you should do a breakin period and run a richer mix for that time.
Once broken in prop it close to the max rated rpm. for best performance and health.

[Many thanks, and remember, time spent fishing is not deducted from one's lifespan.
