I am looking an older Renkin with a 5.7 Gm motor. The owner says he had the outdrive replaced with an SE 116 outdrive. A friend of mine had the exact same boat except his came with the 6 cylinder 4.3 motor. His boat came with the Cobra outdrive. My concern is that the SEI website says that the 116 is a replacement for the OMC II outdrive. Would the 116 be able to handle the torque and horsepower of the 5.7 motor?

That's correct as long as the gear ratio is right for the engine, it should be fine. One thing to keep in mind is that some SEI drives had issues with both noise and metal in the gear oil. I'd want to pull the bottom plug and check for wear particles and run it on the water to check for whine and jumping out of gear. I would not buy without a water test. If you search on the SEI drives you will see good and not so good.
BTW the OMC Cobra drive is just as strong as the Alpha, and was routinely used up to 300 hp just like the Alpha drive.
