I purchased a 15hp Johnson from friend who bought it new in 1991. the model is j15elccs,serial#6295653.The motor runs fine.My friend has always mixed the 16oz. Johnson oil w/
6 gallons of fuel. The owners manual says to mix oil 100:1 after breakin time.If I put 8oz of oil in 6 gallon tank will it lubricate safely?
I may use engine to troll with at times.I just want to make sure I don't starve engine for lubrication but don't want to over lubricate either. :)

Hi. Jerry.

OMC changed their mind about the 100:1 mix after a few engines burned up.

Use the 50:1 mix your friend used.

Good luck. :)

Re: Correct Oil/ Fuel Ratio

I agree, 50:1 is best. It is little oil anyway, and unlikely to cause fouled plugs and such on a good running engine. Most other 2-strokes today all recommend 50:1 for normal use and if there is any advantage to using less the cost of replacing your grenaded motor is much more. I would recommend a good marine rated oil or major factory oil in any 2-stroke though. My weed eater makes less smoke with the whole few ounces I use a year in it; and the price is good if you get it by the gallon and buy a 50 cent measuring cup.
