Correct oil / filter?

I'm in the middle of getting things together to change the oil on my Mercruiser stern drive. It's an Alpha 1, 3.0 The owners manual calls for SAE 40 weight oil, which I bought. However the filler cap sahows to use 10W-30...?? Any suggestions?

Also, I'm having some issues finding the correct filter. Right now it has a Mercruiser filter on it, is there a way a way to cross filter numbers to get what I need at a local parts store or NAPA?? I know they can do that with spark plugs etc... But they aren't having any luck with the numbers I can read off the filter.

Thanks..!!

yeah, paint over that cap

20W50, 25W40, straight 30 all good and easy to find

straight 40 would be ok, but not if you boat into October in the midwest or other cold climates

nothing that starts with 10

Re: Correct oil / filter?

That is not a merc oil fill cap - it has been replaced at some time.

current recomendations from merc are 25w40 then single weight 30 or 40 based on temps that it will be used in.

If you can't figure out which filter you need after Rockies above post, then you probably shouldn't be working on it either.
Forget what's on the filter on their now, who knows what it is. You have a very long list of acceptable filters. Pick one. Or be smart and go OEM Mercruiser. Then you have no questions about what it should be.

Well a one armed one eyed monkey can change oil !! But I've never had such a cluster finding the right filter. Even the ordering customer service guys at this site haven't called me back if that's any indication.... If any of the above will work, then that's sure easy enough..... I'll just take the old along to compare, or break down and pay shipping for twice the purchase price...lol Unfortunately the boat sales/repair place in town closed or this would be easy. The nearest is quite a drive.

Re: Correct oil / filter?

Do you have a NAPA? If so, tell them what you have and they will give you a filter.

EDIT: Not just NAPA, any auto parts store can sell you an oil filter.

Yep NAPA wasn't sure either, that's where I always go. I'll take Rocky's list over and the old filter. I'll get this baby yet...

What are your guys opinions about the supertech st30 oil filter?
Supertech meets the engineering specs and I've always heard
good things about their fluids.

Re: Correct oil / filter?

Out of all the filters listed the Purolator would be my choice.
Stainless steel check valve compared to the cardboard ones inside the wix, phram and most other filters..more filter media also..
