correct me if i am wrong

I am fairly new to outboard motors, but something just doesnt seem right. I pulled what i would think to be the thermostat housing off of the head (the top of the head w/ 4 screws holding a rectangular cover) and there was nothing in there but a peice of cork that looked like a seal of some kind and nothing else, now is that where the thermostat should be?:(

Your right it should be in there.I think they sell them here.You will need a rubber grommet too.
boats.net has these parts too.Go to their site and look up your motor.#79 and 80.J
