What is the correct oil in the lower unit? I have quicksilver 90 wt on the shelf, but when I drained the unit the oil was much thicker, but no water, not cloudy. Owners manual doesn't specify the oil.

Merc recommends either Premium or High Performance gear lube for your gear case.

Go to ww sporting goods dept. Around here they stock 2 oils, one Quicksilver/Merc Premium for about $5 a bottle and Pennzoil Semi-syn Premium for about half that. While there pick up a pump that fits either bottle. Costs a few bucks, but makes changing so easy as compared to fooling with tubes. The Merc is blue/black/greenish, the Penn is honey colored and clear. Regular 90 hypoid went out, for marine use, many years ago.

If you use the Penn, just remember when you check it next time that the oil is honey colored and clear. Water intrusion will make it milky/cloudy. I use the Penn as I know it's partially at least, syn. Merc doesn't say but probably is....but for twice the price?

Thanks, I had quicksilver marine premium on the shelf. Don't care about price for oil, even at twice the price better to go with trusted brand.

Can't fault your logic with oil choice. Don't forget to replace the drain screw seals.

WW doesn't make/refine/process oil, but Pennzoil has done it for half a century or so. No brag, just fact.
