I am looking to possibly repower with a new Mercruiser power plant ,unfortunately I invested a fair amount of money in the old engine and wanted to take some parts off for future use, which includes manifolds and risers. My question is how thorough and strict are the requirements in regards to the core engine return to Mercury. Are they interested in the block and then some or do they require the entire engine with all components included. The dealer said they want everything ,and I was wondering ,is the dealer going to strip down usable components themselves, before they turn in the core.PS impossible to speak to a rep from Mercury core return so far.

No expert for what Merc wants, but
Merc like others send complete motors out for rebuild. When buying a reman motor from Merc it all can be used parts that meet specs for reuse. If your buying a new motor then you should be able to keep your old one, but if buying a reman, then maybe not so much

Could always buy a reman long block from a place like Michigan Motorz and swap the stuff your self. Even MM would want a rebuildable core

if you can do the work yourself you should check out a long block or new base engine from michigan motorz as AD mentions especially if you have a bunch of parts that are worth keeping. I got a partial engine package from them ( new base engine, intake, carb, distributor), itook everything else of my old engine saved about $2 k vs buying a bobtail merc engine, and underneath it all its the same new GM marine base engine...

this only saves money if you are doing the work. If you are paying $150/ hr labor rate at the marina to swap accessories over it will cost you the same as a complete bobtail...
