core plug popped out

just put new seals on raw water pump (because it started to drip out of the weep hole) and when i started the engine one of the core plugs popped out is this normal???? i used a rubber mallet to put it back in again was this the right thing to do???? took her out on the ocean and the plug has stayed there

I've never heard of a core plug just "popping out." I would be concerned about simply putting it back in. I would assume they take a "set" to the hole size and should be not reused. At the very least I would buy a new one and put a little sealer on it and "pop" it back in.
