Installing a water pump kit on my Cobra, and thought I read somewhere about using an adhesive to hold the silver "basket" (whatever its called) into the impeller housing.

Also, do you use any lubricant of any kind on the impeller for its first use?

Trying to avoid frying a second one in the driveway!!

TIA,
Robar

you can use adhesive on the metal housing you need to use adhesive on the housings o-ring. do not use any lubricant on the impeller. soapy water can be used to aid in installation

Its an impeller not a condom. Grease it up.

Grease might make the rubber swell especially if you apply it to much. maybe a little silicon.

On the rubber gasket you are suppose to use OMC Gasket sealing compound. (It's not silicone.) I bought a spray can of it and it works great on most of your gasket requirements on the engine. You can easily open up the water pump thereafter to check your impeller and reseal.

Thanks - anything special about the OMC Gasket Sealing compound, or should any other quality compound work?

Vinney - its been so long since "first use" was an issue, I forgot about greasing it up!

I haven't seen anything like the OMC stuff. It's quite affordable, so I wouldn't dabble with anything else. If you get some of the wrong stuff by accident on your impeller, you will have wished you used the OMC stuff. It comes in a spray can format.

Go to an Evinrude/Johnson dealer, if they sold OMC for a long time they will have that and most of the Cobra parts. BTW, you can still get the OMC shop manual for the Cobra, and it is way better than the after market ones.
BTW, the gasket sealer is for sealing gaskets, screw holes, and sticking the cage in the housing. In the OMC manual they say to use some gear oil (like what you put in the outdrive) to lube the impeller. I did mine according to what they (OMC) say in the manual and no problems!
The nice thing about the gasket sealer is if you use it on the bolt threads it keeps out water and makes it easier to get them out next time. It does not completely harden.
