I have a Mercury Outboard 90HP that I use on my duck hunting boat. My question is, should there be water coming out the "P hole" all the time or is it somehow controlled by thermostat and water only comes out sometimes. Appreciate your response.

Thanks,
RD

Re: Cooling

Fill out the profile, you might be close to someone who can help.Just a few seconds after you start it should come out the hole.Take a piece of weed eater line and run the motor and stick the line up n the hole.Wasps ove to make that a nest for their eggs.
You might have to back flush it.It's easy to take the hoses off and run water even compressed air in the hole.Jerry

Re: Cooling

Probably all the water for the tell tale has to go through the thermostat first. It's possible that an engine in good shape would only piddle a little at idle in duck hunting weather.

Lay your hand on the head. It should be warm to pretty hot, but not sizzling hot.

Re: Cooling

RD, You might tell us the year of the motor, as it makes a difference. The old inline six motors should have water out the telltale all the time. The newer motors may not.
