I recently purchased a 1990 40HP Evenrude. While running on the muffs, it has a strong tell-tale (pee-hole) that is controlled by the water pump. That is, the stream is on when the engine is on and no flow when the engine is off.
From the two exhaust holes below the lower cowling, I get exhaust gas but no water.
From the center of the prop, I get little or no water flow and no apparent exhaust flow, although that is not certain (could be some exhaust gas flow).
The head never gets particularly warm, so it is probable that the themostat is not supposed to open yet. (Weather here is cool, maybe 50F and the hose to the muffs is just plain cold.)
Also, the engine runs slightly rough on the muffs. I have not had it in the water yet due to the weather. I suspect that the added back-pressure from the water will even it out. Enigne has good compression (142 PSI on both cylinders) and good spark.
Should I be concerned?
Thanks,
Terry
