Finished my conversion to short shaft, testing the outboard at home; works fine with the cuffs providing water to the water intake screens, not in the tank if water level reaches one inch above water intake screens ... yet working perfect if water level reaches location of the newly installed impeller. Before going out to Sea, am wondering whether this is normal. Need the impeller be under water level to work properly or should it draw water from the intake screens when these are barely submerged? Did I do something wrong? And, possibly, what might that be?

The water pumps on outboards are not intended to draft water Walter. They need to be under water or have the water forced into them to operate properly.

Sounds like your pump is OK. Be sure to check the engine temp once your on the water.

Thank you, admiral ... was relieved by your advice, tested the outboard, and it runs just fine. Under the sun, the side of the engine block actually cooled down after I started it and had it idle for some minutes. Thank you, again!!
