Cooling question

Ok, I pulled the foot on my 1959 Johnson 18 HP outboard, found the water pump and have a couple of questions. First off, the impeller has all the vanes and is very pliable. I will go ahead and replace it, but in the meantime....
1) When I pulled the foot, there was no gasket where the foot joins the rest of the leg...is that right that there isn't a gasket there?
2) The output end of the pump is a copper tube (water tube I guess) that inserts into a rubber grommet up inside the leg. Would a pump rebuild kit include that grommet or whatever it's called?
3) The water inlet has me confused. On the back of the foot is a sorta rectangular shaped opening...in front of it is a screen. The screen part seems to go to a cast tube, but it seems to be a deadend, which makes no sense to have a screen if it goes nowhere...is there some type of internal tube that is cast into the housing?
4) If anyone can walk me thru the path of the cooling water, I'd appreciate it.
Rob

Re: Cooling question

A complete waterpump kit from OMC will include all grommets needed. Blow compressed air up your water tube to see if you have a restiction in your powerhead. No gasket is used between the ex. and gearcase. That rectangular looking thing is not your water pickup. The screen on your exhaust snout, behind the prop is.

Re: Cooling question

Any suggestions on how I can best get water to the grommet that the water tube fits into so I can try to see if it is unclogged? It is too far into the exhaust housing to reach by hand.

TIA,
Rob

Re: Cooling question

Why not use the water tube that came out of that grommet?Adapt and overcome.
