cooling issue

my buddy and i are working on troubleshooting a water flow issue on my 86 force 85hp motor, we were running water backwards through the thermostat housing and there was water coming out from what the seloc manule calls the trim tab, also from a hole forward of the water inlet on upper half of the lower unit. Is this normal? We are both very new to the boating sceen, any information on this would be great!

Thats called an exhaust snout.Exhaust and water exit there.And a couple of other places.As long as you have a good impeller and the wearplate is ok then you should be ok.J
