Re: converting

MORE THAN IT WILL BE WORTH, YOU WILL BE BETTER OFF TO SELL YOUR 9.9 AND GO BUY YOU A 15.

Re: converting

i don't understand the part about supporting our local dealers!thats what this website is all about, working on your own rig as much as possible.but back to the subject i know from the spec. sheet the 9.9 and 15 hp. are the same.so the carburation must be the main difference, anyway thanks

rfdking:

I hate to burst your bubble but, the real difference is the exhause porting, the size of the exhause ports is what allows more air/fuel to ge into the cylinders to make it a 15hp. You would be better off to buy a 15hp if that is what you want cause "Converting" is about (Or real close) to the same price.

Craig

Re: converting

yeah, I know that my 100 was also released as a 115 and possibly a 125 and I have wondered if I could boost the hp.. particularly since there have been a couple of 115's in the paper wrecking for 100USD..

I imagine that getting the 115 and swapping the 2 side draft two barrel carbs would do the job.. but there is probably exhaust issues as well.

rgds

Frank

Re: converting

RFDKING:

the only difference in my 9.9 and the same year model 15hp is carburation and WOT RPM.
I would check parts breakdown on both. You may be suprised, then again, it may well cost you an arm and a leg to convert it, in which case you would be better off to sell and buy a 15. either way, check the book first and in the mean time, you'll learn more about your engine.

Re: converting

Check with your local dealer. I just order a parts breakdown (numbers and pictures) for a 32 year old 9.8. It cost about $11.00. If the dealer can't/won't get it for you call Mercury in WI and have them give you the part numbers. Mine took about a week to get in. Parts breakdown and a 1970 owners manual.

I wouldn't mind converting my 9.8 to a 15.

Good Luck,
Rob

Re: converting

Hi Rob,
Your old 9.8 is not the same as the newer 9.9/15 series. You're giving up several cubic inches. Your 9.8 is basically a hopped up 7.5. Both use the same 11 cube block. The newer motors are around 15-16 cubes so there's no way you'd squeeze 15 horses out of your 9.8.
- Scott

Re: converting

I have made this conversion on several motors. In general the only way to do this is to compare the parts book for the two motors and change everything (except the cowl decals) that are different. On the newer merc 9.9/15 the carb and the exhaust tuner are different. These parts cost about the same as the difference in price between a new 9.9 and a new 15 but everyone knows that you will take a big hit when you trade your motor so it might make sense to do. I think we did it for arouond $325 CDN which is around $200 US. It's not really a big deal except that the powerhead has to come off to change the exhaust tuner.
