i am looking at converting a trailer.... the trailer will be used for hauling boat or hauling for-wheeler/lawn mower... either a boat trailer converted for hauling the atv/lawn mower...OR... a regular trailer set-up to haul boat...the boat is just a jon-boat with no motor that is pretty lite so i will be able to load/unload pretty easy... the boat trailer i thinking of using is a tilt trailer with 4.80x8 tired but considering changing to bigger tires....

any ideas, concerns or woes about this dual purpose trailer?!?!?!?

Re: converting trailer

Sounds like a good plan.

Maybe a flatbed trailer, with removable bunks. (if you want them) .. and put 4 Tie downs on the bed of the trailer to strap the boat down.

Could just put some marine trailer lights on, buddy bearings and dunk the thing.

...just my opinion.

Re: converting trailer

I would put bigger wheels/ tires on it. At least 12" wheels with 5.30X12 tires. Better payload and turn slower on the highway

Re: converting trailer

I did something similar a few years ago. I had bought a 4x8 flatbed with an extra long tongue (8'), inframe lights so they don't get smashed when you tilt, 1500# capacity so I could haul my 1000# motorcycle if needed, and it has stake pockets on the perimeter.

Used trailer for hauling canoes, extending over the front so as not to smash them in driveways. Hauled some bikes a few times. Appliances, lawn tractor, etc.

Now it is set up to drop 2 boards, anchored into the pockets with rollers attached for a 12' aluminum. No winch, transom straps to pockets, bow straps to tongue. Very simple.

Yes to the 12" wheels. Keep the tilt functional.
I would strip all the rollers and put a deck on it. Then add a removable roller set up and weld on a few tie down hooks.

Re: converting trailer

the trailer is just a bunk trailer so there is no for rollers...there is one on the back but it is centered outside of frame....

as to the floor...
i was thinking of using 2x4's or 2x6's slats in floor or wood expanded metal be better???

Re: converting trailer

If possible, check the trailer load rating. It is easy to overload a trailer when using it as a utility trailer. Same small boat trailers have only a 300 to 400 lb load rating.
Tires count, but the axle and frame are a factor.
