Converting to throttle shift.

I just bought a sail boat with a Yamaha 9.9 with the gear shift on the side of the motor. Supposedly it is a 2001 model. I saw another 9.9 Yahama today about the same vintage with the gear shift on the throttle. Can mine be converted? If so what needs to be ordered and what would it cost? Is this a do-it-yourself job?

Thanks.

You should be able to convert it with alot of effort and might be costly, but I suggest you leave it as is, I have learnt the hard way ... if it works leave it as is ... why do you wanto change it?

The shift is hard to reach while sitting in the cockpit of sail boat at the tiller.

mmm that makes sense, why don't you create a little shaft from the exisitng gear shift and mount it to the side, so it has a pull / push action for you to put it into forward / reverse, sort of like the older control units, but manually different. I'm sure a steel rod a couple of bolts and hose clamps will do the trick? But that is just a quick solution ... if anyone else have any inexpensive way of another solution?

I have already been thinking about doing something like this. And also put an extension over the throttle so when the motor is all the way down it can be controlled from the cockpit.

It will be the cheapest way to do, just remember when you extend the throttle that you can't turn as sharp as with the standard throttle.
